The nature in Muhu<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Muhu is a natural habitat for 23 (!) rare orchid species, which is made possible by the landscape diversity characteristic of the island. Wet meadows and tall dry junipers create a favourable, but also a very vulnerable ecosystem for their survival. The island of Muhu is a stop and nesting place for swans and many other migratory birds that find shelter in numerous coastal bays.<\/span><\/p>\n

DID YOU KNOW<\/strong> that in 1984, the people of Muhu had the opportunity to host pelicans in the waters of the Little Strait, and in 1992 we had black swans. The history of Muhu<\/strong><\/h4>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”17px”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”7\/12″][vc_column_text]Muhu is the third largest island in Estonia, the formation of which began 440 million years ago as a result of the rise of coral cliffs. The first people settled here in 2500 BC, as evidenced by the stone tombs and the rural towns of P\u00e4elda and Linnus that have survived since the beginning of the second millennium.<\/span><\/p>\n

The densely populated island was an independent administrative unit already in ancient times. In 1227, the dramatic final scene of the <\/span>ancient Estonian fight for independence<\/span> took place in the Muhu Island country castle. The battle is also recorded in Henrik’s Livonian Chronicle. It is believed that the ancestors of today’s Muhu\u2019s habitants arrived from Courland.<\/span><\/p>\n

Muhu Island is best characterized by active creative people, closeness to nature, peace and the sea surrounding the island. There are probably hundreds of kilometres of old and restored stone walls in Muhu. To this day, the houses have thatched roofs, which are also common for newer buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Muhu, old traditions are kept alive and passed on. The famous patterns of Muhu have become bright examples of Estonian folk art, as well as dances and songs. When talking to the people of Muhu, you can feel the pride of the time-resistant community about its island and its spirituality. By the way, the people of Muhu, unlike the people of Saaremaa, also cope very well with the \u00f5-vowel!<\/span><\/p>\n
